Kuka? Who?
Olen Anna-Maija Virkki.
Yli 20 vuotta it-alalla, viimeisimmäksi ohjelmistotestauksen parissa työskennelleenä annoin luovalle puolelleni vallan ja tutustuin graafiseen suunnitteluun Helsinki Design Schoolin tutkinnon (2024) kautta sekä verkko-opintojen avulla. Koulutukseltani olen tietotekniikan insinööri (AMK, 2004). Lukioaikana jatkokoulutusvalintaa tehdessäni jouduin heittämään nopalla luovuuden ja tekniikan välillä, koska päätös oli liian vaikea. Päädyin vaatetusalan sijaan opiskelemaan informaatioteknologiaa. Viihdyn teknisen tekemisen ja teknisten ihmisten parissa, mutta luova puoleni on jo vuosien ajan huutanut ulospääsyä. Etsin nyt keinoa yhdistää nämä molemmat puoleni.
Nuorena mm. harjoittelin kalligrafiaa, kävin äitini mukana piirtämässä alastonmallia, piirsin pikselin tarkkoja teoksia 90-luvun Windowsien Paintilla, taiteilin kokeellisesti Corel Draw:lla ja Photoshopilla, tein omat taustakuvani ja suunnittelin oman logoni (lempinimeni kirjaimet muotoiltuna tähden sakaroihin niin, että myös kirjainten keskelle tähden keskipisteeseen jää pienempi tähti). Luovuuteni on käynyt erilaisilla etsintäkierroksilla mm. ompelun, käsitöiden, sisustamisen, remontoinnin ja laulamisen parissa palaten nyt sinne, mistä etsiminen on alkanut.
Ajattelin kätevästi käyttää brändinäni omaa etunimeäni, siinä kun yhdysmerkki koittaa jo valmiiksi luoda yhteyttä kahden erilaisen nimen välille. Vaihdoin logossani yhdysmerkin ajatusviivaan, jolloin mennään Annasta Maijaan. Vai ollaanko jossain välillä? Joka tapauksessa, yksi lempiaiheeni visuaalisessa suunnittelussa on ideointi.
Ideoinnin lisäksi vahvuuksiani ovat eri elementtien sommitteleminen toimivaksi kokonaisuudeksi ja laadukkaan lopputuloksen tuottaminen. Portfolioni sisältö edustaa mielestäni tyyliäni melko hyvin. Etsin inspiraatiota ympäristöstäni, musiikista, muiden töistä ja huomaan tekeväni sitä ihan jatkuvasti. Itselleni tärkeitä arvoja ovat aitous, inhimillisyys, laatu, ilo ja yhteys.

Having worked in the IT industry for over 20 years, most recently in software testing and QA, I decided to give a chance to my creative side and started exploring graphic design through a degree at Helsinki Design School (2024).
I hold a degree in information technology engineering (2004). When choosing my further education during high school, I had to roll the dice between creativity and technology, as the decision was too difficult. Instead of studying fashion, I ended up studying information technology. I enjoy technical work and interacting with technical people, but my creative side has been calling out for years. Now, I’m looking for a way to combine both sides of me.
As a young person, I practiced calligraphy, went with my mother to draw a life model, created pixel-perfect works on Windows Paint in the '90s, experimented with Corel Draw and Photoshop, made my own wallpapers, and designed my own logo (my initials shaped into the points of a star so that a smaller star is left at the center, in the middle of the star’s center). My creativity has taken me on various exploration journeys, including sewing, handicrafts, interior design, renovation, and singing, and has now returned to where the search began.
I thought it would be convenient to use my first name as my brand, as the hyphen already tries to create a connection between two different names. In my logo, I replaced the hyphen with an em dash, so it goes from Anna to Maija. Or are we somewhere in between? In any case, one of my favorite topics in visual design is ideation.
In addition to ideation, my strengths are in arranging various elements into a functional whole and producing high-quality results. I believe the content of my portfolio represents my style quite well. I find inspiration in my surroundings, music, and the work of others, and I notice that I’m constantly getting inspired. The values that are important to me are authenticity, humanity, quality, joy, and connection.
